Magnetic Resonance Imaging of Parotid Oncocytoma

چکیده
Oncocytomas are a group of rare neoplasms occurring in the parotid gland and account for less than 1% of all salivary gland tumors. Oncocytoma is a benign tumor composed of oncocytes with many hyperplastic mitochondria, usually presenting a solitary nodule. We reported a rare case of a slow-growing parotid oncocytoma in a 73-year-old woman who presented with a palpable mass in the left infra-auricular region for about 7 years. MRI showed a welldefined hypointense mass on T1-weighted images (T1WI) and isoto slightly hypointensity on short inversion time inversion recovery (STIR) images compared to the parotid gland parenchyma. Moderate tumor enhancement was noted after intravenous gadolinium-based contrast medium administration. The patient underwent left parotidectomy and the histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of oncocytoma. The characteristic MR imaging features with their differential diagnosis are discussed and literatures reviewed. Pre-contrast axial T1-weighted and b. axial STIR images, MRI reveals a mass in the deep lobe of left parotid gland. The mass displays low signal intensity to the parotid gland on T1WI and isoto slightly hypointensity on STIR images. (arrows) c. Post-contrast axial T1-weighted image with fat suppression shows moderate enhancement of the mass. The final diagnosis of parotid gland oncocytoma was confirmed. After surgery, the patient recovered well without facial nerve weakness or any other complications. During the follow-up period, no obvious recurrent tumor could be found.

Oncocytoma of the Deep Lobe of the Parotid Gland
BACKGROUND Oncocytoma or oxyphilic adenoma is uncommon salivary gland tumour, occurs predominantly in the in patients older than 60 years of age. Clinically oncocytoma resemble other salivary tumours while histology is typically consisting of oncocytes with many hyperplastic mitochondria. It usually occurs in the parotid gland. Because the features of oncocytoma are similar to those of other be...
متن کاملUse of imaging techniques in detection of parotid masses Location compared to surgery
Objective: The purpose of this study was to compare the use of cross-sectional imaging techniques verses surgery in locating parotid masses. Material and Methods: Our study was performed on patients assumed to have parotid masses from Dec 2010 to Dec 2011. Before surgery, imaging studies (Computed Tomography and Magnetic Resonance Imaging) of parotid were done. After surgery, we compared the s...
متن کاملDynamic Contrast Magnetic Resonance Imaging (DCE-MRI) and Diffusion Weighted MR Imaging (DWI) for Differentiation between Benign and Malignant Salivary Gland Tumors
Background: Salivary gland tumors form nearly 3% of head and neck tumors. Due to their large histological variety and vicinity to facial nerves, pre-operative diagnosis and differentiation of benign and malignant parotid tumors are a major challenge for radiologists. Objective: The majority of these tumors are benign; however, sometimes they tend to transform into a malignant form. Functional M...

Parotid gland oncocytoma is an uncommon, benign salivary neoplasm composed of mitochondria-rich oncocytes. The purpose of this study was to correlate MR imaging and histopathology of parotid gland oncocytomas and to define the features that may distinguish these neoplasms from other benign and malignant parotid gland tumors. The MR imaging features in 9 patients with a pathologic diagnosis of o...
